Job Description:
The Exercise Physiologist works as part of an integrated
clinical team and is accountable to design an exercise prescription
based on each Rehab participant?s clinical status and/or exercise
testing results. The exercise physiologist will monitor
physiological data and make appropriate adjustments for the safety
and therapeutic benefit of the patient/participant. They will also
assist in the education of participants, and interact and
communicate effectively with other disciplines involved in care of
adult and geriatric Rehab participants.
Manages (and leads) the exercise area effectively. Accurately
monitors heart rate, blood pressure, SpO2, EKGs and blood glucose
as needed. Accurately monitors patient progress and provides
methods for improving aerobic capacity, and muscular strength and
endurance, and adjusts each participant/ patient's program to meet
individual needs as appropriate. Able to recognize biomechanical
deficiencies and assess fall risk to help the participant overcome
or find alternative exercises. Directs warm-up and cool-down
routines in safe, effective manner in accordance with ACSM
guidelines.
Participates in intra-departmental initiatives, special projects
and committees as appropriate for the growth of the division. This
may include but is not limited to public speaking engagements,
written communication, and radio and/or TV interviews (both live
and taped).
Outpatient - Performs functional capacity tests, balance and
musculo-skeletal evaluations with attention to accuracy and safety.
Uses test results to create customized exercise prescription and
results report. Inpatient - Implement Inpatient services and
evaluate for Outpatient services. Perform patient ambulation
documenting response to activity in medical record.
Documents necessary information in patient's medical record in an
accurate and timely manner. Assists with data management and
quality indicators for the Rehab program as appropriate with
attention to detail and timeliness.
Provides individual and group education sessions for
patients/participants. Counsels patient/participant on exercise,
risk factors and other applicable teachings on health and medical
conditions. Refer to appropriate providers as necessary.
Develops an individualized exercise plan/program for the
patient/participant for home and discharge.
Facilitates the preventive maintenance of equipment. Takes the
initiative to promote safety and program flow by maintaining a
written and documented preventative maintenance program. Takes
leadership role in ensuring all equipment is calibrated and
maintained in safe and proper working order in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations. Coordinates with Bio-Med and/or
facilities service personnel for proper maintenance follow up.
Collaborates with Leadership regarding program exercise equipment
needs/repairs.
Generates referrals, memberships and new patient/participant
enrollments which includes telephone calls or communicating with
providers regarding program participation.
Supervises student interns ensuring adherence to policies,
procedures, and techniques, answering questions, conducting
orientation, explaining correct procedures, demonstrating
techniques, and intervening where warranted to correct
deficiencies. Includes providing informal and formal feedback in a
constructive, thorough, and timely manner. Helps coordinate daily
tasks and schedule to assist the intern in meeting his/her
goals.
EDUCATION: Required: Bachelor?s Degree in exercise science,
exercise physiology, kinesiology or physical education.
Preferred: Master?s Degree preferred in exercise science, exercise
physiology, kinesiology or physical education.
EXPERIENCE: Required: 3 years minimum experience in clinical
setting or related field with Bachelor's Degree candidate.
Preferred: 1 or more years of experience working with cardiac and
pulmonary rehabilitation.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: REQUIRED
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Required: Must be able to sit for and obtain ACSM Clinical Exercise
Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) or ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise
Physiologist (ACSM-RCEP) within 1 year of hire or transfer.
PREFERRED
ACLS within one year of hire or transfer preferred.
