Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Description:

This position will provide mechanical engineering leadership for projects as well as testing and installation support. The successful candidate will have substantial experience with automation, expert solid modeling design skills, project development experience and risk management skills. Work experience with material selection, fabrication and machining processes used for making components required.

Major Accountabilities:
Conceptualizes and designs highly complex automatic machines, robotic cells and material handling systems, including development and checking of technical specifications, drawings and bills of material. Assignments require creativity, initiative and good engineering judgement.
Manages the scope of work for mechanical design on projects, including planning, supervising and verifying the work of other engineers and designers to ensure effective performance of the work.
Provides leadership and direction in technical risk evaluation, functional decomposition and interface management to design team. Provides technical expertise in automation and equipment engineering practices.
Ensures commitments on projects are met including cost, schedule, function, performance, serviceability, and appearance. Delivers complete and accurate designs within the allotted time.
Leads design reviews to evaluate: functional and regulatory requirements, error budget development, tolerance analysis, sub-assembly decomposition, manufacturability, material specifications, bills of material development including use of standard components, and validation processes. Experienced with DFMA product development techniques.
Supports sales activities including initial customer meetings, design conceptualization, hours estimating and quote generation. Develops and maintains positive customer relations and works to identify additional sales opportunities.
Creates 3D part/assembly models and detail drawings for manufacture per design best practices using Solidworks -. Must be able to perform tolerance and finite element analysis on components and assemblies. Working knowledge of Inventor -, AutoCAD -, and other CAD software a plus.
Supports fabrication, testing and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
Devises and promotes continuous improvement efforts focused on work systems and methods.
Provides effective reports and presentations to communicate concepts, designs, test results, etc.
Effectively uses company's systems and procedures, to manage work in an accurate and timely manner.
Perform additional duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
Working environment is generally favorable with adequate lighting and temperature. Will be required to work on the assembly floor as needed during machine assembly and testing. Must be able to lift 25 pounds as needed. Conditions at customer sites may vary from excellent to very poor. Generally less than 25% travel required.

Minimum Education Required:
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMET). Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) a plus.

Minimum Years of Experience Required:
Ten (10) years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, including substantial 3D modeling and automation systems design experience

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Experience leading fixed and robotic assembly system concept development and design. A strong precision machine design background would be a plus.
Experience influencing working relationships within cross-functional teams to handle multiple priorities and meet schedule milestones. Comfortable in front of customers.
Experience with project management methods, practices and tools including scoping, facilitation, delegation and risk management best practices.
Ability to accurately estimate the level of effort required to complete a design.
Possesses a desire and capacity to coach and mentor other engineers and designers.
Experience with 3D CAD design (Solidworks - preferred). Including finite element analysis experience and configuration management for complex assemblies.
Demonstrated mechanical component and assembly design experience, including dimensioning, tolerance setting and tolerance analysis. Needs a thorough understanding of GD&T standards
Demonstrated experience in engineered component selection and major equipment specification development.
Ability to make recommendations for secondary operations, procedures, fixtures, and supplies. Substantial knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes such as: machining, grinding, welding, hand assembly, fasteners, roll-to-roll converting, etc.
Demonstrated ability to create drawing packages, electronic bills of materials and engineering change orders in product data management (PDM) systems.
Pneumatics systems design knowledge & experience with creating pneumatic schematics. P&ID experience preferred.
Curious in nature and eager to learn new ideas, methods and technologies.
Innovative, proactive, energetic, can-do type of personality.
Self-starter, able to work with little supervision.
