Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) is engaged in cross-cultural research, teaching, and service within diverse local and global connections. It is a large department in the College of Arts and Sciences with 46 full-time faculty members: 14 tenure-line and 32 full-time lecturers or visiting assistant professors. Additional instruction is provided by 11 part-time lecturers and varying numbers of teaching assistants and tutors. Eight languages are taught in LLC: American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The department has approximately 200 first- and second-majors pursuing a BA degree in Spanish or a BA in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with concentrations in French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, K-12 Teaching Licensures (French, Spanish) and Global Languages and Communities. Minors are available in ASL, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. LLC also has about 15 graduate students pursuing the MA degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with a concentration in French and Francophone Studies or Spanish or the MEd or MAT degree in French or Spanish. In addition, the department offers a 15-hour Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Advanced Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultural Studies. The Department actively participates in foreign language studies consortia within the UNC distance education system as well as in interdisciplinary programs throughout the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly the International and Global Studies Program (IGS). Online courses, including four-semester language sequences (French, German, Spanish) and an Online German Minor program are available to distance learning students across the globe. Position Summary The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of North Carolina Greensboro invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chinese language, literature, and culture to begin August 1, 2019. Applicants must hold or anticipate holding a PhD in the field of Chinese literature (traditional or modern), cultural studies, or related subjects by August 1, 2019. All applicants should show evidence of a strong research program and a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds, and excellence in teaching all levels of modern standard Mandarin at U.S. universities. Experience designing curricula, developing course materials, and working with study abroad programs is a plus. A native or near-native proficiency in both modern standard Mandarin and English is required. Duties will include teaching courses in Chinese language, literature, and culture as well as strengthening the Chinese program at UNCG. This position will also require a dedication to leading co-curricular initiatives, supporting UNCG's "Global Village" learning community, enhancing community engagement, and working with interdisciplinary programs, especially International and Global Studies (IGS), where the Asian Studies program resides.
