Job Description:
The Office of Sponsored Programs at Virginia Tech is seeking
either an Assistant or Associate Director of Financial Management
to be part of the OSP Post Award Management leadership team. This
position will lead the day-to day operations and management of post
award financial management group, which consists of 1 team lead, 1
senior associate, and 6 associates. The Financial Management group
is responsible for invoicing, financial reporting, and close out of
a diverse portfolio of sponsored grants, government and
non-government contracts, and cooperative agreements. The
assistant/associate director of financial management will be
responsible for managing the day-to-day performance of staff for
timely invoices, reporting, and accounts receivables to mitigate
risk to the institution. The assistant/associate director of
financial management will be responsible for developing and
reviewing SOPs, staying abreast of regulatory changes, establishing
training requirements for direct reports and campus department
stakeholders, ensuring the institution’s policy and procedures meet
federal and state regulatory requirements, implementing appropriate
internal controls, and participating in audit reviews. The
assistant/associate director of financial management will provide
leadership to their team of post award research administrators,
foster teamwork and collaboration with colleagues and sponsors, and
talent development. This position reports to the director of
financial management and compliance and will serve as a backup for
invoicing and drawdowns in sponsor systems, including, but not
limited to grants.gov and the DoD’s Wide Area Work Flow system. To
be considered for the associate director level, the successful
applicant will need to have demonstrated experience with change
management and leadership of a similar team in a university having
research expenditures in excess of $400M per year. Required
Qualifications • Masters degree or a Bachelors degree with
significant relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a
Masters degree. • Demonstrated sponsored project financial
accounting experience, including invoicing, financial reporting,
and closeout of awards. • Demonstrated experience and working
knowledge of some federal and nonfederal regulations and
guidelines, cost principles, and uniform administrative
requirements for grants and audits of states, local governments,
and nonprofit organizations. • Demonstrated leadership and
independent initiative. • Previous supervisory experience. •
Financial grants administration experience in a research or
academic environment. • Relevant research administration
certification such as CRA (Certified Research Administrator) or
CFRA (Certified Financial Research Administrator), or obtain the
certification within 12 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications •
Work experience with federal and nonfederal grant and contact
regulations. • Experience in federal or other sponsor invoicing
systems. • Demonstrated experience with change management and
leadership in a university setting. (required for the level of
associate director) • Demonstrated experience in a university
having research expenditures in excess of $400M per year. (required

Information This position is hybrid, with the expectation of an
on-campus presence 3 days per week. The successful candidate must
live within a commutable distance of Blacksburg, Virginia. The
hybrid work schedule will be confirmed following an onsite training
period in accordance with Policy 4325, Alternative Work Site and
Telework Policy. The successful candidate will be required to have
